Dr. Mario Rivero-Huguet

Biography

Mario is an international science and technology diplomacy expert member of the OECD.AI Network of experts with over 20 years of experience at the intersection of technology, international relations, economic development and policy, including more than 15 years as a senior UK science diplomat. He served as Head of Science and Technology and National AI Lead for the UK diplomatic mission in Canada, where he played a leading role in shaping policies on AI, fostering bilateral cooperation and advancing the UK’s strategic interests in AI. Before joining the UK diplomatic mission in Canada, Mario worked with the Commission for Environmental Cooperation in North America and Canada’s International Development Research Centre, contributing to international research cooperation, environmental and health policy, sustainable development and science-based decision-making. He has also taught at Canadian and international Universities and contributed to academic and professional capacity-building initiatives worldwide. Throughout his career, Mario has worked to strengthen national and economic security through technology partnerships, promoting national sovereignty & security and build trusted international ecosystems for research, innovation and technological development. His work spans the responsible development and use of AI, safety, governance, and the societal implications of AI. He helped shape global policy discussions across G7 state members and has regularly advised and briefed Ministers, senior government officials and international decision-makers on AI, digital technologies and other disruptive technologies.His work has helped mobilise investments in AI, advanced computing, and digital innovation, translating scientific excellence into economic opportunities. Currently, Mario is Senior Advisor in Science Diplomacy and Global AI Governance at Université de Montréal advising on international strategy, global partnerships and AI governance.
